Diethanolamine (DEA) and Triethanolamine (TEA): These ingredients function as emulsifiers or foaming agents in cosmetics and can cause dyness of hair and scalp, eye irritation, and reactions due to allergies. DEA can react with other ingredients and form NDEA (nitrosodiethanolamine), which is a potent carcinogen that has been linked to certain types of cancers.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulface (SLES) : These irritant detergents, which are absorbed by the body, are added to shampoo and toothpaste as a foaming agent but can also be found in garage floor cleaners, car washes, and are commonly used for industrial degreasing. They have been shown to cause scalp and eye irritation and a number of health concerns have been published regarding their use.
Parabens: Synthetic chemicals used as a preservative to extend product shelf-life. They have a demonstrated ability to mimic estrogen, a hormone known to play a role in the development of breast cancers. Studies have shown high levels of Parabens to be detected in breast tumors.
Propylene Glycol (PG): A chemical found in cosmetic products, used to retain moisture, which can weaken protein and cellular structure. An industrially used anti-freeze, brake and hydraulic fluid, and paint and solvent component, PG can cause severe skin irritation. The EPA warns against skin contact to prevent brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities.
Synthetic Dyes and Colors: Used in skin and hair products to make them colorful. In certain individuals, use of these chemicals can result in skin irritation and allergic reaction, and leads to hair being dry, rough, and fragile. A known human carcinogen, 4-ABP, has recently been found in off the shelf hair dyes.
